Go sightseeing from Melbourne on this exclusive Phillip Island and Penguin Parade tour. Starting in the afternoon to Phillip Island ensures you have ample time in hand to explore the island, as well as get good seats for the much awaited Penguin Parade, the highlight of the day!
Your air-conditioned coach ride takes you south-east to Westernport Bay making your way down to Phillip Island. Leaving the city, you will pass through Melbourne’s premium residential areas, alongside buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Your driver/guide will keep you up-to-date with the sights along the way pointing out the key landmarks.
As you pass through the countryside dotted with farms, you’ll know you’ve truly left the city behind. You will pass through San Remo, the gateway to Phillip Island. Known as the local seafood capital, fishing is a popular pastime here, and you can see the local fisherman casting lines off the jetty.
Cross over the bridge and you will be entering Phillip Island, an island ready for adventure and action! With good surfing conditions and an amazing coastline, watching the sunset from here is a relaxing experience. The main event of the day is the Penguin Parade, which starts in the evening.
Head over to the Information Centre which is a storehouse of – you guessed it – information on Phillip Island. Anything and everything, from history to wildlife can be read up in detail here. Souvenir shoppers can also score some penguin memorabilia. Grab an early dinner from the café, so you can head to the grounds of the Penguin Parade and get the best seats up front.
Summerland Beach is the venue for the evening, where all the action happens. As the sun sets, the penguins slowly come out of the waters to their burrows, waddling over the sands, cautiously keeping an eye on the rapturous audience.
Penguins are cute, but the ones at Phillip Island are cuter still! Why? Because they’re fairy penguins, a little more than palm size, yet rank so much higher on the cute-o-meter! The Phillip Island penguins are the smallest of the species, and have been making this journey for over thousands of years.
Head back to Melbourne with the mental image of little penguins waddling over the beach, which is sure to bring a smile to your face no matter what happens!
