Experience a journey back to Aboriginal times at Bathurst Island, located just 80 kilometres away from Darwin. Start early on the day of your tour to board your ferry, Pacific Cat, from Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal. Cruise for 2 hours to arrive at the Aboriginal community of Nguiu on Bathurst Island, where you’ll be welcomed by a local guide.
Once your guide acquaints you with the contemporary Aboriginal community of Nguiu, move onto the museum in a comfortable A/C coach. See exhibits speaking of traditional Tiwi Island art, culture and dreamtime stories. Your guide will entertain you with many interesting tales about the early mission days. Learn how Tiwi people integrated their culture with Christianity from depictions of Early Mission Precinct and unique Tiwi-style Catholic Church.
Enjoy some authentic billy tea and damper as you watch the Tiwi ladies go by their day weaving and painting. Your guide and Tiwi women will also entertain you with their unique totem dances. Before you move on, the ladies will perform a ritual known as the ‘smoking ceremony’ to bless their visitors and will enlighten you about its significance.
Next, visit arts and crafts co-operatives where artists work, and if you’re lucky, you may even see some of them in action. Make most of the island prices and buy some souvenirs to take home. Your tour ends at a picturesque point that overlooks a Tiwi burial site. Your guide will tell you about complex rituals associated with Pukamani Poles (burial poles), traditional bush tucker, bush medicine and natural fibres and dyes, as you capture some great pictures of the area.
